Red spinel, which for a long time was mistaken for ruby because of its exceptionally beautiful red color. The differences from ruby are: ① it has extremely few inclusions (internal features) that would obstruct transparency and brilliance. ② While most rubies are enhanced by heat treatment to improve their appearance, red spinel’s beauty is natural and does not require artificial treatment. ③ Whereas ruby is birefringent, red spinel is singly refractive. (Single refraction, as in diamond, produces fewer color variations and a clear, pure sparkle.)
