The defining feature of opal is its "play of color," which changes appearance depending on how the light hits it. This mysterious phenomenon is caused by the opal's orderly arrangement of particles and the moisture contained within the stone. Brilliant flashes of red, orange, yellow, green, and blue blend together in complex ways. It may be because this rich variety of expressions stimulates the senses that opal is said to be "a gemstone that enhances creativity."
